Steps to Remember in The Event of an Auto Accident

Traffic accidents can be very stressful and chaotic situations. One of the most important things to remember if you get in an auto accident is to remain calm and in control. Knowing what to do in the event of an accident is the best way to prepare yourself.

  1. If it's safe to do so, make sure no one is in immediate physical danger. Call 911 immediately if an ambulance is needed. Regardless of who your auto insurance company is, drivers' safety is always the first priority.
  2. In most states, the police must be notified.
  3. Exchange name, address, telephone number and the name of insurance company and/or agent with the other driver(s) involved. It would also be a good idea to get the contact information of any witnesses.
  4. Get the make, model and license plate number of each vehicle involved and write down a description of the damage. If you have a camera or camera phone on hand, it is a good idea to photograph the damage sustained on any vehicle involved as well as the accident scene.
  5. At the first opportunity contact your insurance company to notify them that you have been involved in an accident.
  6. There are a number of conditions in your insurance contract that you must satisfy in order to receive compensation. For example, you'll need to cooperate during any investigation undertaken during the claims settlement process. Failure to complete or comply with any of these actions could result in non-payment by your insurance company for losses that otherwise would have been covered.

In 1986, American Express Financial Corporation acquired the Wisconsin Employers Casualty Company of Green Bay, renamed it IDS (Investor Diversified Services) Property Casualty Insurance Company, and began selling auto, home, and umbrella insurance in Wisconsin. Within a year, the company had expanded coverage to Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio. By 2005, IDS Property Casualty began doing business as Ameriprise Auto & Home Insurance, but IDS Property Casualty Insurance Company remains the underwriting company.

Today Ameriprise offers insurance products in 42 states and has more than 1,200 employees. It is not available in Alaska, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, North Dakota, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Wyoming, or the territory of Puerto Rico.

Ameriprise auto insurance offers personal liability, collision/comprehensive, uninsured motorist, roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, and more. Discounts are awarded for safe driving, vehicle safety features, multiple vehicles, loyalty (multiple-policy), and tenure. No deductible is also offered for glass repair.

The standard home insurance policies include a few extras such as coverage for food spoilage due to power failures, losses due to unauthorized credit card use or check fraud, identity theft (up to $5,000), and lock replacement due to theft. Additional scheduled personal property coverage with no deductible is also one of several options. Discounts include multi-policy, age of home, home safety features, longevity, and renovation discounts.

Similar discounts are available with renters insurance, including safety features discount such as deadbolt locks and sprinkler systems.

Ameriprise umbrella insurance is available from $1 million up to $5 million with auto, home, or renters policies.

Through partners—including American Modern, Arrowhead, Chubb, Embrace, Hartford, Progressive and RLI—Ameriprise can also provide specialty coverage such as insurance for collector vehicles, ATVs, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, watercraft, and flooding.

Ameriprise offers online quotations for auto, home, renters, and personal umbrella insurance, as well as specialty insurance underwritten by affiliates. Policies are also sold through Ameriprise Financial’s licensed financial advisors or through partner companies such as Costco and Ford.

It has received 209 complaints in the last three years, 75 of which were closed in the last 12 months. The majority of complaints, 133, concerned product/service issues and 60 complaints involved billing/collection issues.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ Center for Insurance Policy and Research shows that Ameriprise’s complaint ratio for 2016 was 1.90 compared to a median complaint ratio of 1.00 for all companies offering private passenger auto insurance.
